15 Jun 2024: The Illawarra zone in New South Wales has become the fourth officially declared offshore wind area in Australia. Following public consultation ran between August and November of 2023, the area has been declared suitable for offshore wind development. The declared area covers 1,022 km2, with a maximum capacity of 2.9 GW, compared to the original proposed area which was 1,461 km2 with a maximum capacity of 4.2 GW. The reduced size came amid concerns about turbine visibility from the coast; the minimum distance to shore has been increased from 10 km to 20 km. There were also concerns around impacts on marine life and adequate space for the shipping industry. Feasibility applications for the area are now open, and will close on August 15th 2024.
